(Thursday, May 6, 1937, 7:25 p.m. EDT) — The hydrogen-filled German passenger airship Hindenburg burned and crashed tonight during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at Naval Air Station Lakehurst in Manchester Township, New Jersey, killing 35 of the 97 people on board and a Navy crewman on the ground.

The disaster was the subject of spectacular newsreel coverage, photographs, and Herbert Morrison’s “Oh, the humanity!” recorded radio eyewitness reports from the landing field, which were broadcast the next day.
