(Monday, August 17, 1987)Rudolf Hess, the last surviving member of Adolf Hitler’s inner circle, died today at Spandau Prison in West Berlin, Germany, at age 93, an apparent suicide.

Hess, once one of Hitler’s designated successors, was the last survivor of the 19 German officials convicted by the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg in 1946.

Given a life sentence, he had been an inmate of Spandau Prison in West Berlin since 1947; for the last two decades, Hess had been Spandau’s only occupant.
