(Sunday, August 31, 1997, 12:23 a.m. CEST)Diana, Princess of Wales, was critically injured early this morning when the black 1994 Mercedes-Benz S280 she was riding in crashed in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel in Paris as the driver, Henri Paul, lost control and struck a pillar at an estimated speed of 65 mph.

Diana was transported to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital, where she died at 4:00 a.m. CEST at age 36.

Paul and the son of Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed, Dodi Fayed (who was in a romantic relationship with Diana), were pronounced dead at the scene.

The bodyguard of Diana and Fayed, Trevor Rees-Jones, was still conscious, having suffered multiple serious facial injuries (he would be the only survivor of the crash).
