‘Candle in the Wind 1997/Something About the Way You Look Tonight’ by Elton John peaks at #1 in USA 20 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (Oct 11 1997)

(Saturday, October 11, 1997)“Candle in the Wind 1997”/“Something About the Way You Look Tonight” by Elton John, a tribute single to the late Diana, Princess of Wales, with the global proceeds from the song going towards Diana’s charities, peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for 14 consecutive weeks (Oct. 11/18/25, Nov. 1/8/15/22/29, Dec. 6/13/20/27, 1997, Jan. 3/10, 1998.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, “Candle in the Wind 1997” is the second highest selling single of all time (behind Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” from 1942) and it is the highest selling single since charts began in the 1950s.
