(Tuesday, November 15, 1977, 9:40 p.m. EST; during the Arab–Israeli conflict) — U.S. President Jimmy Carter toasted the Shah of Iran tonight at a White House dinner, saying “We look upon Iran’s strength as an extension of our own strength, and Iran looks upon our strength as an extension of theirs.”

Earlier in the day, Carter welcomed the Shah in ceremonies disturbed by drifts of tear gas as supporters and opponents of the Shah clashed outside the White House in a battle of fists, stones and nail-studded boards that left 92 demonstrators and 27 policemen injured.
