Bush targets ‘axis of evil’ in State of the Union address 10 years ago this hour (2002)

(Tuesday, January 29, 2002) — George W. Bush delivered his first State of the Union Address tonight, declaring that the U.S.-led war against terrorism has only just begun.

It was a rousing and bellicose speech that brought waves of standing ovations in the Congress.

At one point the President hinted at broadening the war against terror to include Iraq, Iran and North Korea, states which he said constitute “an axis of evil.”
