(Monday, December 10, 2001) — The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, a fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson based on the first volume of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, was launched at a glitzy world premiere tonight in London.
Set in Middle-earth, the story tells of the Dark Lord Sauron, who is seeking the One Ring, which has found its way to the young hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood).

(Friday, November 30, 2001) — Gary Ridgway, responsibile for the murders of at least 48 women since 1982 as The Green River Killer, was arrested today as he was leaving the Renton, Washington, Kenworth Truck factory where he worked.
Ridgway was initially arrested for the murders of four women whose cases were linked to him through DNA evidence.

(Thursday, November 29, 2001, 1:30 p.m. PST) — George Harrison, the Beatles’ quiet lead guitarist and spiritual explorer who added both rock ‘n’ roll flash and a touch of the mystic to the band’s timeless magic, died today of lung cancer at a Hollywood Hills mansion.
Harrison’s death at the age of 58 would not be publicly announced until the following day.
