‘Cabaret’ opens in U.S. theaters 40 years ago today (1972)

(Sunday February 13, 1972)Cabaret, a musical film set in Berlin during the Weimar Republic in 1931, under the ominous presence of the growing National Socialist Party, opened today in the U.S. (including the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City).

Produced and directed by Bob Fosse and starring Liza Minnelli, Michael York and Joel Grey, the film is loosely based on the 1966 Broadway musical of the same name.

‘Missing’ opens in U.S. 30 years ago today (1982)

(Friday, February 12, 1982)Missing, a drama film based on the true story of American journalist Charles Horman, who disappeared in the bloody aftermath of the US-backed Chilean coup of 1973 that deposed leftist President Salvador Allende, opened today in U.S. theaters, including the Beekman Theater in New York.

Directed by Costa Gavras, the film starred Jack Lemmon, Sissy Spacek, Melanie Mayron, John Shea, Charles Cioffi and Janice Rule.
