Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the film stars James Mason, Shelley Winters, Sue Lyon and Peter Sellers.

FDR launches nationwide rubber drive 70 years ago this hour (1942)

Roosevelt called on the American people tonight to dig into their attics, cellars, garages and barns for old rubber articles of every description and sell them to 400,000 neighborhood gasoline filling stations for 1 cent a pound between June 15-30 as a contribution to the nation’s all-out effort to defeat the Axis.

30 Koje captives killed as Yanks win ‘breakup’ battle 60 years ago today (1952)

(Tuesday, June 10, 1952, during the Korean War, part of the Cold War) — American paratroopers of the “Angels from Hell” combat team emptied Compound 76 of its 6,000 fanatical North Korean prisoners of war today in 2 1/2 hours of bloody fighting on Koje Island, off the South Korean coast.

It had been a month since the prisoners in Compound 76 had taken the camp commandant, Brig. Gen. Francis T. Dodd, hostage for 78 hours.
