(Monday, July 12, 1943, 6:50 a.m. local time; during the Battle of Prokhorovka, part of the Battle of Kursk on the Eastern Front of World War II) — The battle of Prokhorovka between German invaders and Soviet defenders, regarded as one of the largest tank battles in military history, took place today with no clear victor.
Recent research shows us that Prokhorovka was actually a tactical win for the Germans but a strategic win for the Russians. Forget the Russian propaganda-stories of hundreds German tansk (with many Tigers and Panthers) beaten by ramming and shooting T34. Acutally not many Tigers and almost no Panthers were present at Prokhorovka. The Russians lost hundreds (>400) of tanks. Von Manstein thought he could win back the initiative, but the invasion of Sicilia took place and Hitler called of the offensive mainly because of the second front what was emerging. After this the German never got back the intiative at the “Ost-Front”.
