Johnson left Parkland Hospital for Air Force One at Love Field to take the oath of office as the 36th President upon the death of President John F. Kennedy and to return to Washington D.C. The announcement of Kennedy’s had been withheld from the public until after Johnson’s departure from Parkland for security reasons.

The shooting would lead to the arrest of Lee Harvey Osland who would later be identified as the assassin of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

Kennedy left Love Field in Dallas in an open car motorcade headed for a luncheon at the Dallas Trade Mart with Governor and Mrs. John Conally seated in front of them. Over 150,000 people lined the ten mile motorcade route (note: the motorcade turned off Harwood onto Main Street in downtown Dallas at 12:21 p.m. and reached the Adolphus Hotel at 12:27 p.m. The president was shot while riding in Dealey Plaza at 12:30 p.m.; the presidential limousine arrived at Parkland Hospital at 12:36 p.m. CST.).
