(Sunday, February 7, 1904, 10:48 a.m.) — The Great Baltimore Fire began today in Baltimore that raged for about 30 hours and destroyed a major part of central Baltimore, including over 1,500 buildings covering an area of some 140 acres. 1,231 firefighters were required to bring the blaze under control. Five lost lives were later attributed indirectly to the fire.

(Wednesday, February 6, 1924) — Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States (1913-1921), was laid to rest today in the quiet peace of subterranean vaults in the National Cathedral. Wilson, 67, died Feb. 3, 1924, as a result of a stroke and other heart-related problems (click here to watch more video of today’s funeral).

(Saturday, February 5, 1994; during the African-American Civil Rights Movement (1955–68)) — White separatist Byron De La Beckwith was convicted today in Jackson, Mississippi, of murdering civil rights leader Medgar Evers, 37, on June 12, 1963, and was immediately sentenced to life in prison. De La Beckwith appealed unsuccessfully, and died at age 80 in prison in January 2001.
