President Lincoln meets General Grant for first time 150 years ago this hour (Mar 8 1864)

(Tuesday, March 8, 1864, at about 9:30 p.m.; during the American Civil War) — Union General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in Washington today unrecognized, but word quickly spread that he was in town, and he was warmly received at Willard’s Hotel.

Grant then proceeded to the weekly reception at the White House, where he met President Abraham Lincoln for the first time. In the East Room, Grant stood on a sofa so the cheering guests could see him.

(Monday, March 7, 1994) — The U.S. Supreme Court, in Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc., unanimously ruled today that a parody that pokes fun at an original work can be considered “fair use” that doesn’t require permission from the copyright holder. The ruling concerned a parody of the Roy Orbison song “Oh, Pretty Woman” by the rap group 2 Live Crew.

(Friday, March 5, 2004) — Domestic cultural icon Martha Stewart was convicted in New York today of obstructing justice and lying to the government about why she’d unloaded her Imclone stock just before the price plummeted. Her ex-stockbroker, Peter Bacanovic, also was found guilty in the stock scandal. Each later received a five-month prison sentence.
