(Monday April 9, 1984, 6:00 p.m. PST) — Terms of Endearment, a comedy-drama about a mother and her daughter, won five Oscars tonight at the 56th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and James L. Brooks for Best Director and Shirley MacLaine for Best Actress.

Robert Duvall won Best Actor for Tender Mercies. The ceremonies were held at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles, with Johnny Carson serving as host for the fifth and final time (1979-1984).
