(Thursday, June 2, 1864; during the Battle of Cold Harbor, part of the Overland Campaign of the American Civil War) — After Union Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Hancock’s men marched almost all night and arrived in position too worn-out for an immediate attack this morning, Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant agreed to let the men rest and postponed an attack until 5 p.m., and then again until 4:30 a.m. on June 3.
