(Sunday, June 4, 1944, 11:09 a.m. local time; during World War II) — U-505, a German submarine, was captured today by a U.S. Navy task group in the south Atlantic about 150 nautical miles (278 km; 173 mi) off the coast of Río de Oro; it was the first such capture of an enemy vessel at sea by the U.S. Navy since the War of 1812.

(Wednesday June 3, 1964) — Two days after arriving in the U.S. for the first time, The Rolling Stones taped their first national television appearance in America today in Los Angeles for the June 13, 1964, edition of The Hollywood Palace, performing “I Just Want to Make Love to You.”

They also performed “Not Fade Away” for the Sept. 12, 1964, edition of the program.

The Stones had debuted on American television the night before (June 2) on The Les Crane Show, which aired only in New York City.
