Video: 'Jan. 20, 2005: Inaugural Ceremonies for George W. Bush'

(Thursday, January 20, 1985, 11:56 a.m. EST) — George Walker Bush was sworn in today for a second time as the 43rd president of the United States, and in an Inaugural Address striking for its idealism told Americans that spreading liberty around the world was “the calling of our time” and that the nation’s “vital interests and our deepest beliefs are now one.”

Bush, 58, whose career in elective politics began only a decade ago as the governor of Texas, took the oath of office at 11:56 a.m. under broken clouds from an ailing Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist.

On the inaugural platform, Bush was seated near Vice President Dick Cheney, who was sworn in for a second term by the House speaker, J. Dennis Hastert, only minutes before Bush took the oath.

Bush and Cheney, Republicans, had narrowly defeated the Democratic ticket of John Kerry-John Edwards in the November 2004 general election.
