Cleveland sworn in as 22nd U.S. President, Hendricks as 21st VP 130 years ago today (Mar 4 1885)

(Wednesday, March 4, 1885) — Former Governor Grover Cleveland of New York was inaugurated today as the 22nd President of the United States at the East Portico of the United States Capitol with Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite administering oath of office.

Cleveland replaced Chester A. Arthur who had failed in a bid to be elected to a second term.

Former U.S. Senator Thomas A. Hendricks of Indiana was inaugurated as the 21st Vice President of the United States (the office had been vacant since Arthur became president upon the assassination of President James A. Garfield on Sept. 19, 1881).

Cleveland and Hendricks, who ran on the Democratic ticket, had defeated Republicans James G. Blaine-John A. Logan in the November 1884 general election. Cleveland was the first Democrat elected president since the American Civil War.
