(Friday, March 9, 1945, evening local time; part of the Pacific War during World War II) — 334 B-29s launched Operation Meetinghouse tonight, dropping 1,665 tons of bombs on Tokyo, destroying approximately 15.8 square miles of the city and killing some 100,000 people.

U.S. B-29 bombers launched incendiary bomb attacks against Tokyo, resulting in an estimated 100,000 deaths.

The firebombing of Tokyo was the single deadliest air raid of World War II; greater than Dresden, Hiroshima or Nagasaki as single events.
