‘Match Point’ premieres at Cannes Film Festival 10 years ago today (May 12 2005)

(Thursday, May 12, 2005)Match Point, a drama film about a former tennis pro who falls for a femme-fatal type who happens to be dating his friend and soon-to-be brother-in-law, premiered today at the Cannes Film Festival.

Directed by Woody Allen, the film starred Brian Cox, Matthew Goode, Scarlett Johansson, Emily Mortimer, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Penelope Wilton.

(Monday, May 12, 1975, afternoon EDT) — The Jefferson Starship (formerly the Jefferson Airplane) opened the New York summer season for pop music this afternoon with a free concert on the Great Lawn of Central Park. The band and a New York radio station ended up paying $14,000 for damages and park cleanup.

(Wednesday, May 12, 1965) — The Rolling Stones recorded the final version of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” considered by some critics to be one of the all-time greatest rock songs ever recorded, today at RCA Studios in Hollywood.

In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine placed “Satisfaction” in the second spot on its list of “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.”

Cambodian navy seizes unarmed U.S. ship Mayaguez 40 years ago this hour (May 12 1975)

(Monday, May 12, 1975, 2:18 p.m. local time; during the Vietnam War, part of the Indochina Wars and Cold War) — The White House announced today the new Cambodian government had seized an American merchant ship, the Mayaguez, in international waters.

U.S. Marines gained control of the ship three days after its seizure, not knowing the 39 civilian members of the crew had already been released by Cambodia.
