‘The Return of the Pink Panther’ opens in U.S. theaters 40 years ago today (May 21 1975)

(Wednesday, May 21, 1975)The Return of the Pink Panther, the fourth in a series of comedy films featuring an inept French police detective, Inspector Jacques Clouseau, opened today in U.S. theaters.

Directed by Blake Edwards, the film starred Peter Sellers, returning to the role of Inspector Clouseau for the first time since A Shot in the Dark (1964), Catherine Schell, Christopher Plummer and Herbert Lom.

(Monday, May 21, 1945, shortly after noon EWT; during World War II) — Actors Humphrey Bogart, 45, and Lauren Bacall, 20, were married today in the spacious hallway of the twenty-room house of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Louis Bromfield on Malabar Farm in Lucas, Ohio, in a three-minute ceremony.

It was his fourth marriage, her first, and would last until Bogart’s death in 1957.
