‘A View from the Bridge’ opens on Broadway 60 years ago this hour (Sep 29 1955)

(Thursday, September 29, 1955, 7:30 p.m. EDT)A View from the Bridge, a one-act version of the Arthur Miller play (later turned it into a two-act play), opened tonight on Broadway at the Coronet Theatre (now the Eugene O’Neill Theatre) in New York.

Directed by Martin Ritt,t he production starred Van Heflin as Eddie and Eileen Heckart as Beatrice.

Roberts Jr. became the 17th Chief Justice of the United States today, taking the oath of office during a brief but emotional White House ceremony just hours after the Senate, with its Democrats evenly divided, voted overwhelmingly to confirm him.

President Johnson establishes National Endowment for the Humanities 50 years ago this hour (Sep 29 1965)

(Wednesday, September 29, 1965, 9:50-10:25 a.m. EDT) — U.S. President Lyndon Johnson signed the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965 today, creating the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Endowment for the Arts.

During the signing ceremony, the president said the measure would create an American Film Institute (click here to watch video of the event).
