(Saturday, September 24, 1955, 2:00 a.m. MST) — U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower suffered a serious heart attack early this morning while on vacation in Denver. Mississippi jury acquits two white men in Emmett Till murder 60 years ago this hour (Sep 23 1955)

(Friday, September 23, 1955, at 3:43 p.m. local time) — Two Mississippi white men, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, accused of murdering 14-year-old Chicago African-American Emmett Louis Till after he had supposedly whistled at a white woman were acquitted today in Sumner, Mississippi.

A jury of twelve white neighbors of the defendants reached the verdict after one hour and five minutes of deliberations. The two men later admitted to the crime in an interview with Look magazine.

President Ford survives second assassination attempt in 17 days 40 years ago this hour (Sep 22 1975)

(Monday, September 22, 1975, 3:25 p.m. PDT)Sara Jane Moore, 45, fired a single shot from a .38 caliber revolver at U.S. President Gerald R. Ford today outside the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco, but a civilian bystander deflected the gun just as it went off and Ford was not hit.

Moore’s assassination attempt took place just 17 days after Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme’s attempted assassination of Ford in Sacramento, California.

(Sunday, September 22, 1985, 10:00 a.m.-midnight CDT) — The first Farm Aid, a concert staged to raise money for family farmers in the United States, was held today at University of Illinois’ Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois, featuring rock and country music artists like John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson and Neil Young.

Attended by 80,000 people, the event raised over $9 million for America’s family farmers.
