(Monday, October 4, 1965, 8:30 a.m.-10:00 p.m. EDT) — Pope Paul VI made the first papal visit to the Western Hemisphere today, spending about 14 hours in New York.
The pope addressed the United Nations General Assembly, where he urged delegates to adopt as their solemn oath: “No more war, war never again,” attended the New York World’s Fair and celebrated Mass at Yankee Stadium.
He also met with President Lyndon Johnson.
