(Wednesday October 9, 1985) — Strawberry Fields, a section of New York’s Central Park just east of 72nd Street and Central Park West, was dedicated to the late musician John Lennon today with his widow Yoko Ono, son Sean Lennon and Mayor Ed Koch in attendance on what would have been the former Beatle’s 45th birthday.
Ono, who donated $1 million towards the project, also conceived the idea for the two-and-a-half-acre site, which was a favorite walking spot for the Lennons located just outside their residence at the Dakota apartment building before Lennon was assassinated Dec. 8, 1980.
The Strawberry Fields area has been landscaped and planted with trees, shrubs and flowers from all over the world, including the Soviet Union, Jordan and Israel.
