(Monday, November 22, 1875, 7:20 a.m. local time) — Henry Wilson, the 18th Vice President of the United States (1873-1875, under Ulysses S. Grant), suffered a fatal stroke today while working in the United States Capitol Building.
Following Wilson’s death at age 63, the office of Vice-President was vacant until March 4, 1877, when William A. Wheeler was inaugurated.
Wilson was the fourth of seven U.S. Vice Presidents to die of natural causes while in office (1812-1912).
