(Wednesday, February 28, 1996, 8:00-11:00 p.m. EST) — A cheating ex-boyfriend and a voice full of breaks and wails brought four major Grammy Awards to Alanis Morissette, the 21-year-old Canadian songwriter who was the big winner tonight in the 38th Annual Grammy Awards at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Her Jagged Little Pill was named album of the year and best rock album; its first single, “You Oughta Know,” was named best rock song and best rock female vocal performance (click here for several clips from the show).

‘We Are The World’ takes four Grammy awards 30 years ago this hour (Feb 25 1986)

(Tuesday, February 25, 1986, 8:00-11:00 p.m. EST) — “We Are The World,” the all-star recording that raised millions of dollars for African famine relief, won four Grammys tonight during the 28th Annual Grammy Awards at Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles.

“We Are The World,” an anthem that was written by Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson and recorded by 45 top stars, was voted Record of the Year and Song of the Year and picked up two more Grammys for best pop group performance and best short video.

Phil Collins No Jacket Required was voted best album of the year.

‘How Will I Know’ by Whitney Houston peaks at #1 in USA 30 years ago today (Feb 22 1986)

(Saturday, February 22, 1986)“How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for two consecutive weeks (Feb. 15/22, 1986). It was Houston’s second of 11 number one singles on the chart (1985-1995).

(Wednesday, February 8, 2006, 8:00-11:30 p.m. EST) — The veteran Irish rock band U2 captured the limelight tonight at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards, winning five awards for their album How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, including album of the year, and overshadowing the comeback story of the evening, Mariah Carey, and the producer-turned-rapper Kanye West.

Sly and the Family Stone also reunited for a performance. Stone had not performed live in 19 years.
