(Monday, March 25, 1996, 6:00-9:38 p.m. PST) — Braveheart, a historical drama epic film about Scottish national hero Sir William Wallace and his 13th-century rebellion against landowning English nobles, won seven Oscars tonight at the 68th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Mel Gibson for Best Director.
Nicolas Cage won Best Actor for Kiss of the Spider Woman and Susan Sarandon won Best Actress for Dead Man Walking.
The ceremonies were held at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles with with Whoopi Goldberg as host.
