(Wednesday, June 28, 1876) — Governor Samuel J. Tilden of New York was unanimously nominated president on the second ballot today at the 1876 Democratic National Convention meeting at the Merchants Exchange Building in St. Louis.
On the first ballot, Tilden finished ahead of Governor Thomas A. Hendricks of Indiana with 401.5 to 140.5 votes.
The convention would nominate Tilden’s running mate the following day to oppose the Republican ticket of Rutherford B. Hayes and William A. Wheeler in the United States presidential election, 1876.
