(Saturday, July 17, 1976, 3:00 p.m. EDT) — Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, officially opened the 1976 Summer Olympics (officially known as the Games of the XXI Olympiad) this afternoon at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in front of an audience of some 73,000 in the stadium, and an estimated half billion watching on television.

Competition would continue through Aug. 1, 1976.
