(Saturday, July 19, 1996, 8:30 p.m. EDT) — Muhammad Ali, who suffered from Parkinson’s decease, dramatically lit the Olympic cauldron and President Bill Clinton officially opened the 1996 Summer Olympics (known officially as the Games of the XXVI Olympiad) tonight at the Centennial Olympic Stadium in Atlanta.
Competition would continue through Aug. 4, 1996.
