(Thursday, August 15, 1996, 9: 54 p.m. EDT) — Former Senator Bob Dole of Kansas accepted the Republican nomination for President tonight at the 1996 Republican National Convention meeting at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.

Dole won the nomination Aug. 14, 1996, at 9:10 PDT by defeating Conservative columnist Pat Buchanan from Virginia by 1928 to 47 votes on the first ballot.

Former Rep. Jack Kemp of New York was nominated Vice President by a voice vote on Aug. 14, 1996.

Dole and Kemp would oppose the Democratic ticket of President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore in the United States presidential election, 1996.
