(Tuesday, November 5, 1996, during the 1996 presidential campaign) — Democratic incumbent President Bill Clinton of Arkansas was re-elected today over Republican former Senator Bob Dole of Kansas.

Clinton and his running mate, Vice President Al Gore of Tennessee, defeated Dole and his running mate, U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, 49.2-40.7% in the national popular vote, resulting in a 379-159 victory in the Electoral College.

Texas businessman Ross Perot and his running mate, economist Pat Choate, received 8.4% of the popular vote and no electoral votes on the Reform Party ticket.

Clinton and Gore would be sworn in for their second four-year terms on January 20, 1997.
