(Tuesday, November 6, 1956, during the United States presidential election, 1956) — Republican incumbent President Dwight D. Eisenhower of Pennsylvania was re-elected today over Democratic former Governor Adlai Stevenson of Illinois in the last election in which the major candidates were both renominated for a rematch of the previous presidential election.

Eisenhower and his running mate, Vice President Richard Nixon of California, overwhelmingly defeated Stevenson and his running mate, Senator Estes Kefauver from Tennessee, 57.37-41.97% in the national popular vote, resulting in a 457-73 victory in the Electoral College.

Eisenhower had defeated Stevenson in 1952 by a slightly smaller margin of 55.18-44.33% in the national popular vote, resulting in a 442-89 victory in the Electoral College.

Eisenhower was the first Republican to be elected twice since William McKinley in 1896 and 1900 and the Eisenhower-Nixon ticket was the first Republican ticket to be elected twice.

Eisenhower and Nixon would be sworn in for their second four-year terms privately on Sunday, January 20, 1957 and publicly the following day, January 21, 1957.
