(Thursday, March 8, 1917; during World War I) — Women in Petrograd, Russia, went on strike today for “Bread and Peace,” demanding the end of World War I, an end to Russian food shortages and the end of czarism.
The demonstration marking International Women’s Day initiated the February Revolution, which would result in the abdication of Czar Nicholas II, the end of the Romanov dynasty and the end of the Russian Empire.
