(Thursday, March 15, 1917, 3:00 p.m. MSK; during World War I) — Seven days into the February Revolution, Emperor Czar Nicholas II of Russia today abdicated the throne in favor of his brother, Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich.

Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich rejected the offer unless it was given to him by popular mandate. And with no such mandate in the offing, the Russian monarchy – one thousand years old – came to an end on Mar. 16, 1917, and a provisional government was announced.
