(Monday, March 28, 1977, 7:00 p.m.-10:38 p.m. PST) — Rocky, an American sports drama film about a dimwitted boxer who fights to prove he can go the distance against a glamorous champ, won three Oscars tonight at the 49th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (John G. Avildsen).

Peter Finch won Best Actor, Faye Dunaway won Best Actress and Beatrice Straight won Best Supporting Actress, all for Network, and Jason Robards won Best Supporting Actor for All the President’s Men.

Ceremonies were held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California, with Warren Beatty, Ellen Burstyn, Jane Fonda and Richard Pryor acting as hosts.
