(Friday, May 20, 1927, 7:52 a.m. EDT) — American aviator Charles Lindbergh took off this morning from Roosevelt Field in Garden City on New York’s Long Island, piloting the Spirit of St. Louis, bound for Paris in an attempt to become the first person to complete a non-stop trans-Atlantic airplane flight.
