(Thursday, June 8, 1967, at about 2:00 p.m. EEST; during the Six-Day War) — 34 American servicemen were killed today when the USS Liberty, a Navy intelligence-gathering ship in the Mediterranean Sea, was mistakenly attacked by Israeli planes and torpedo boats in international waters about 15 miles north of the Sinai Peninsula.
Israel later said the Liberty had been mistaken for an Egyptian vessel.
