(Monday, August 1, 1977, at about 12:40 p.m. PDT; during the Cold War) — Francis Gary Powers, whose U-2 espionage flight over the Soviet Union touched off a crisis in Soviet-American relations in 1960, was killed today with his cameraman, George Spears, when the helicopter he piloted as a reporter for KNBC-TV ran out of fuel and crashed into a field near Encino, Los Angeles.
