(Tuesday, August 16, 1977, 2:30 p.m. CDT) — American singer and actor Elvis Presley, regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, was found unconscious on the floor of his bathroom today at his Graceland estate in Memphis, Tennessee.
Presley, often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll” or simply “the King,” was pronounced dead an hour later (3:30 p.m. CDT) at Baptist Memorial Hospital, after doctors failed to revive him.
His death at age 42 followed many years of prescription drug abuse.
