(Friday, September 15, 1967) — The British rock band The Who trashed their instruments and stage gear and set off an explosion originating from Keith Moon’s drum kit during today’s taped performance of “My Generation” for the Sept. 17, 1967, edition of the CBS comedy and variety television series The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour at CBS Television City studios in Los Angeles.

The resulting detonation threw Moon off his drum riser and his arm was cut by flying cymbal shrapnel. Pete Townshend’s hair was singed and suffered a permanent hearing loss. In addition, a camera and studio monitor were destroyed.
