(Thursday, December 11, 1997, at approximately 1:00 p.m. JST) — The Kyoto Protocol, an international treaty that commits State Parties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions based on the scientific consensus that global warming is occurring and it is extremely likely that human-made CO2 emissions have predominantly caused it, was approved today by more than 150 countries at a global warming conference in Kyoto, Japan.
