(Sunday, December 10, 1967, 3:25 p.m. CST) — R & B singer Otis Redding, 26, and six others were killed today when the plane they were on plunged into Lake Monona in Wisconsin.

The twin-engine Beechcraft was en route from Cleveland to a performance in Madison, Wisconsin, when it was lost in a fog.

The other victims of the crash were four members of the Bar-Kays: guitarist Jimmy King, tenor saxophonist Phalon Jones, organist Ronnie Caldwell and drummer Carl Cunningham; their valet, Matthew Kelly; and the pilot, Richard Fraser — all drowned.

A seventh person on the plane, Bar-Kays member Ben Cauley, was able to swim to the lake shore.

The cause of the crash was never determined.
