(Saturday, January 17, 1998, story time-stamped 23:32:47 PST/Sunday, January 18, 1998, 2:32:47 a.m. EST) — The Clinton–Lewinsky scandal, an American political scandal that involved President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky, came to light tonight on the Drudge Report website, which reported that Newsweek editors were sitting on a story by investigative reporter Michael Isikoff exposing the affair.

That same day, Clinton had given a deposition in the Paula Jones’ sexual harassment lawsuit against him in which he denied having had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky.

The Clinton-Lewinsky story broke in the mainstream press on Jan. 21, 1998, in The Washington Post.

Further investigation led to charges of perjury and to the impeachment of Clinton in 1998 by the U.S. House of Representatives. He was subsequently acquitted on impeachment charges of perjury and obstruction of justice in a 21-day Senate trial.
