(Wednesday, January 20, 1988, evening EST) — The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, The Supremes and four members of The Drifters were inducted at the third annual hall of fame ceremony tonight at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel’s Grand Ballroom in New York City, with speeches, tributes and a closing jam session.
Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones inducted The Beatles with George Harrison and Ringo Starr in attendance while Yoko Ono, Sean and Julian Lennon represented John Lennon, who was murdered in 1980.
Paul McCartney did not to attend, citing “still-existing business differences” among The Beatles. “It would have been hypocritical to appear on stage with them, waving and smiling.”
Those “business differences” McCartney referred to would be settled in November 1989.
