(Saturday, February 7, 1998, 11:00 a.m. JST) — Athletes from 72 nations marched today in the opening ceremonies of the 1998 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XVIII Olympic Winter Games, at Minami Nagano Sports Park in Nagano, Japan.

Japanese figure skater Midori Itolit lit the Olympic flame during the opening ceremonies.

2,176 (1,389 men, 787 women) competed in 68 events in 7 sports (14 disciplines) through Feb. 22, 1998.

Germany won both the most gold medals (12) and overall medals (29).
