(Wednesday, March 22, 1978, 11:15 a.m. AST) — Karl Wallenda, the 73-year-old patriarch of “The Flying Wallendas,” the most famous troupe of high-wire walkers in circus history, plunged to his death today when wind gusts apparently caused him to lose his balance as he tried to walk along a 750-foot-long cable strung between two hotel towers in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
