(Wednesday, April 10, 1968, 7:00 p.m.-8:50 p.m. PST) — In the Heat of the Night, an American mystery drama film about a black police detective from the North who forces a bigoted Southern sheriff to accept his help with a murder investigation, won five Oscars tonight at the 40th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Rod Steiger).
Mike Nichols won Best Director for The Graduate, Katharine Hepburn won Best Actress for Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Estelle Parsons won Best Supporting Actress for Bonnie and Clyde and George Kennedy won Best Supporting Actor for Cool Hand Luke.
The ceremonies, delayed for two days because of the assassination of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., were held at Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, California, with Bob Hope serving as host for the fourth consecutive year.
