(Wednesday, April 15, 1998, 10:15 p.m. local time) — Pol Pot, the notorious leader of the Khmer Rouge regime that sent as many as two million Cambodians to mass graves that are often referred to as the “Killing Fields,” died tonight of an apparent heart attack while under house arrest in his jungle hideout in northern Cambodia near the Thai border.
Pol Pot was 72.
